The Centre for Asian Legal Studies (CALS) at the Faculty of Law, National University of Singapore, is inviting applications from suitable candidates in the field of Asian legal studies to carry out research relevant to our programmes and objectives and to help with the work of the centre. For information about CALS, please visit .

CALS values scholarship employing a wide range of methodologies (doctrinal, empirical, theoretical, comparative, etc.) and in all fields of law relating to Asia. Subject areas of particular interest are comparative public law in Asia; aspects of law in China/Greater China; law and religion in Asia; international law in Asia; and comparisons of common and civil law jurisdictions or two or more civil law jurisdictions in Asia. Applicants with quantitative backgrounds in empirical research are also encouraged to apply.

DUTIES
• Subject to the standard NUS terms as to annual leave, appointed candidates will be expected to be in residence throughout the term of their appointments.
• An appointee will be expected to develop a research agenda related to or adjacent to one of the above themes, including undertaking substantial research projects leading to publication during the term of the appointment. Such research may include, but is not limited to, the writing of articles for publication in refereed journals, contributing to book chapters in edited collections, and preparing a monograph or other book for publication.
• An appointee will also be expected to assist in other CALS research projects and initiatives as assigned by the Centre Director.
• Appointees will be required to present their ongoing research, and to participate in and contribute to CALS events.

REQUIREMENTS

1. An ideal candidate would be of exceptional calibre and have attained a PhD in a relevant area of law:

For appointment as a Post-Doctoral Fellow, the successful applicant must hold a PhD or its equivalent in law (preferred), or a related field in Asian politics and history. The applicant should also have a strong research agenda and track record in Asian legal studies.

2. The principal selection criterion will be the applicant’s track record in and potential for research in Asian legal studies. Existing research work in CALS-related areas will be considered favourably. The applicant should submit a one-page research plan proposal for consideration.

3. The candidate will be expected to assist in some organizational work related to the work of the centre. A strong command of English is required.

Job Title/Position:

Postdoctoral Research Fellow (Process modelling, Technoeconomic assessment and Life cycle analysis)

Job Purpose/Objective of the Position:

You will be working in the Proteins4Singapore (P4S) programme, a comprehensive research programme with renowned scientists of plant and food technology, food chemistry, and business sustainability. Interdisciplinary teams will generate state-of-the-art methods and techniques to ensure a sustainable protein supply in highly urbanized environments.

The focus of research is on the evaluation of alternative protein production processes. We will establish total value assessments of protein supply chains for technologies developed from this project as well as for the major existing animal and plant-based sources of protein. The key methodologies used in this project are process modelling, techno-economic analysis (TEA), life cycle assessment/analysis (LCA), and supply chain analysis. The project will be at the interface of food sciences, process modelling, TEA, LCA, and supply chain optimization.

This is a fixed term contract until March 2027.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Data collection for performing process modelling on existing and developed protein production, extraction and processing technologies in this project.
  • Performing technoeconomic and total value assessment of the processes developed in this project.
  • Evaluate different modes of protein-rich biomass (soy and microalgae) and understand the entire supply chain from food security perspective.
  • Performing LCA for evaluating the environmental footprint of different processes/process configurations and comparing them.

Job Requirements/Competencies:

  • Good understanding of process modelling, LCA and TEA.
  • At least 1 year of experience in food processing related process will be highly valued.
  • Experience in the software tools.
  • Process modelling and TEA: UniSim/SuperPro Designer/Aspen plus; LCA: Gabi (LCA for Experts)/SimaPro
  • Experience on related standards such as ISO 14040, ISO 14044, ISO 14067, GHG Protocol.
  • Strong interdisciplinary skills at the intersection of food production, sustainability, life cycle assessments, product supply chains, etc.
  • Self-motivated and quick learner who is passionate about latest trends and technologies in food production and Agri-Tech.
  • Passionate about domain of sustainability and evaluating product and processes to understand environmental and social impact.
  • Good team player, able to work with deadlines and dynamic requirements.

Qualification Requirements:

  • PhD in Engineering/Chemical Engineering/Environmental Engineering/ Industrial Engineering with strong skills in mathematical modelling, process modelling, Technoeconomic assessment and life cycle analysis from a reputable university.
  • Experience or interest in using process modelling tools and LCA tools in interdisciplinary work in the sustainability domain.
  • Strong skills in English speaking and writing, problem-solving and communication.
