Job Description

Job Summary: A Speech Therapist, also called a medical speech-language pathologist, assesses, diagnoses, and treats patients of all ages with speech, language, communication, and swallowing disorders that may be caused by neurological conditions like stroke, brain injury, or cancer, developing individualized treatment plans, educating patients and their families, and collaborating with other healthcare professionals within the hospital setting.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following; other duties may be assigned.

  • Conduct comprehensive evaluations to assess speech articulation, language comprehension and production, voice quality, fluency, and swallowing function.
  • Identify specific speech, language, or swallowing disorders based on evaluation findings.
  • Develop individualized treatment plans tailored to each patient’s needs, including specific goals and therapy techniques.
  • Provide direct therapy sessions to patients using various techniques to improve communication and swallowing skills.
  • Perform modified barium swallow studies to assess swallowing function and recommend dietary modifications if necessary.
  • Educate patients and their families on communication strategies, swallowing precautions, and home exercises to support progress.
  • Work closely with other healthcare professionals like doctors, nurses, occupational therapists, and physical therapists to coordinate patient care.
  • Maintain detailed patient records, including progress notes, treatment plans, and discharge summaries.
  • Stay updated on current research and best practices in speech-language pathology.

Education And/or Experience

Master’s degree (M. A.) or equivalent required; four to ten years related experience and/or training preferred.
