Purpose of Job
- Implement the orangutan component of the Sarawak Conservation Programme's Wildlife Conservation Strategy (SCP) by conducting fieldwork, supporting wildlife connectivity measures, engaging with local communities, and contributing to habitat protection efforts, ensuring activities are completed according to agreed timelines and standards.
- Collect, organise, and report data on orangutans and their habitats including distribution, threats, and habitat condition, to inform conservation planning and decision-making.
- Coordinate activities and communications among field staff, local communities, government agencies, and other partners to support effective collaboration.
- Assist in preparing funding proposals by compiling data, conducting basic background research, and providing administrative or logistical support as needed.
- Support team operations and professional growth by carrying out other reasonable duties related to the role, as assigned by supervisor.
- Contribute wholeheartedly to organisational events and activities that require team-wide participation, helping to advance WWF-Malaysia's goals and foster teamwork, with prior approval from the Senior Biologist, Senior Manager, or Head of Conservation Sarawak.
Key Outputs
- Planned orangutan conservation activities are successfully carried out. This includes doing field surveys, implementing wildlife connectivity features, and reducing conflicts between people and orangutans.
- Accurate and organized information about orangutans and their forest is collected and recorded. This includes data on where orangutans are found, the condition of their habitat, and any threats they face. The information is used for internal reports, monitoring Planned Intermediate Results, and may be shared with partners when needed.
- Awareness programmes and community meetings are successfully run. This helps local people learn about orangutans, understand their importance, and get involved in protecting them.
- Good coordination and communication are maintained. The officer keeps in touch regularly with the internal team and other SCP teams working in the same project area, local communities, government staff, and other partners to ensure everyone is working well together and progress is tracked.
- Junior staff and community rangers are trained and supported. The officer helps build local skills by mentoring field assistants, rangers, or interns involved in orangutan work.
- Clear and timely reports are submitted. This includes regular updates on activities, field results, technical progress reports, and other inputs that support the team's progress reviews and reporting to donors and partners.
Major Activities
- Take charge of the orangutan component of the Wildlife Conservation Strategy. This includes carrying out fieldwork, implementing wildlife connectivity features, working with local communities, and performing other hands-on tasks to ensure the effective delivery of the orangutan component.
- Monitoring orangutans and reporting findings. This includes regularly assessing orangutan populations and forest conditions, collecting important information, and preparing reports to help the team make better decisions and improve conservation efforts.
- In the course of performing the duties as set out in this Job Description, the incumbent may be exposed to challenging working conditions, especially for field-based staff members. Specifications
- A passion for wildlife conservation and a strong commitment to WWF-Malaysia's mission.
- 1–3 years of work or volunteer experience in wildlife conservation, environmental work, or related fields. Experience in orangutan or rainforest conservation, and working with local communities or in the field, is a plus.
- Basic understanding of orangutan biology, habitat, and the threats they face is preferred.
- Familiarity with basic fieldwork tools and techniques, such as using GPS, setting up camera traps, or monitoring wildlife.
- Able to collect and organize field data, and prepare simple reports clearly and on time.
- Good communication skills and ability to work well with field teams, local communities, government agencies, and partners.
- Basic computer skills, especially in using Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Knowing how to use mapping tools like GIS is an added advantage.
- Fluent in English and Bahasa Malaysia. Knowing local Sarawakian dialects or indigenous languages is a plus.
- Has a valid driving license and is willing to travel often to rural or remote areas in Sarawak.
