Job Description

The chemist manages the laboratory daily operations and analyzing of the precious metals content using scientific ways and any other duties related to the role.
  • Drive the identification of testing and analytical methodologies for the testing and refining of base and precious metals from electronic waste and jewelries.
  • Development of company’s Standard Operating Procedures for the testing and analysis.
  • Procurement of equipment required to carry out the above work.
  • Preparing and maintaining budget for the procurement of consumables.
  • Preparation and testing of precious metals laden samples from spent auto catalysts, electronic waste, gold refining, etc.
  • General maintenance of equipment and housekeeping of the Laboratory.
  • Monitoring the safety compliance of all lab consumables, equipment, and fixtures.
  • Managing all the portable X-ray devices including but not limited to the equipment maintenance log.
  • Work with the Guangzhou laboratory and other team members to perform analysis works on Precious and Platinum Group Metals found in electronic scrap, spent auto-catalyst, and other related materials using machines like ICP-OES and XRF and other lab equipment.
    • Ensure that the differences in analysis are within an analytical tolerance.
    • Providing support to develop a solution plan to enhance the sampling, analysis, and extraction process for precious metals.
  • Work with the business team and other team members to support the development of capability and skill set to perform sample analysis of Precious Metals and Base Metals, and determine the most profitable recovery strategy.
  • Provide analysis data for the Engineering team to fine-tune the process and sampling system.
  • Identify and evaluate new analysis methods.
  • Sampling process for precious metals.
Secondary Job Duties
  • Assist in monitoring & reviewing of the department’s monthly and quarterly operational budget and report to the CFO.
  • Application and management of related licenses (e.g. NEA etc.) required for the lab consumables, equipment & fixtures.
  • Lab Documentations Administrations.
  • ISO administration and renewal.
  • Assist in the recruitment of Lab staff (interviewing).
  • Assist in training and guiding of interns and trainees.
  • Any other duties related to the role.
Job Requirements
  • At least a Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry or any other equivalent qualifications.
  • Minimum 4 years of working experience in the related field, especially in electronic waste precious metals analysis.
  • 2 years’ experience in handling XRF analytical equipment; experience with ICP analysis will be advantageous.
  • Experience in ISO renewals will be an added advantage.
  • Must be able to converse and read well in English & Mandarin as our main operations and Head Chemist are based in Guangzhou, China.

About the role

The QC & Laboratory Manager is responsible for ensuring the product safety, quality, and compliance of food products through effective management of the Quality Control laboratory. This role involves developing and implementing quality control systems, supervising laboratory activities, and driving continuous improvement in testing protocols and product release processes.

In this role, you will be based at Tampoi, looking over the QC and Laboratory Division in FSQ Department at both Tampoi and Pasir Gudang sites.

Reporting to : Food Safety & Quality Manager

Key responsibilities

Developing and Implementing Quality Control Systems

  • Develop, implement, and maintain quality control (including In Process Quality Control - IPQC) procedures, protocols and standards in compliance with food safety and quality requirements / regulations.
  • Ensuring lab participation in periodic proficiency testing program.
  • Ensuring method validation is carried out and SPC is utilized.
  • This includes overseeing chemical and physical testing and releasing of raw and primary packaging materials, in-process samples, and finished goods, while upholding food safety & quality standards such as GMP, HACCP, FSSC 22000.

Supervising Laboratory Operations:

  • Ensure accurate and timely analysis and releasing of raw and primary packaging materials, in-process samples, and finished products.
  • Ensure lab instruments are calibrated, maintained and adherence to Good Laboratory Practices (GLP).
  • Overseeing sample collection, product quality testing, and documentation.
  • Ensuring the laboratory operates efficiently and effectively.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of all quality control activities, including test results, audits, and corrective actions, ensuring full traceability of products.

Ensuring Product Quality and Safety:

  • Track quality metrics and prepare reports, presentations, operational documents, and other communications containing descriptive, analytical, and evaluative content related to Quality Control activities and arrive at sound conclusions.
  • Support in non-conformities and deviations investigation and implement corrective actions.
  • Support internal and external audits.

Driving Continuous Improvement

  • Identifying areas for improvement in testing protocols and product release processes.
  • Promoting a culture of quality and continuous improvement within the organization.

Team Leadership and People Management:

  • Lead daily laboratory operations and supervise a team of QC Personnel.
  • Providing training and development opportunities for team members.
  • Fostering a positive and collaborative work environment.
Qualifications and skills
  • Degree in Chemistry, Food Science, Microbiology, or related disciplines.
  • 5 to 8 years of QC or laboratory experience in food manufacturing environment, with at least 3 years in a leadership role.
  • Strong understanding of quality control tools such as Statistical Process Control (SPC), laboratory management and ISO 17025.
  • Proficiency in data analysis and statistical methods.
  • Proficient in analytical techniques, food microbiology, and quality systems. Learn and effectively utilized specialized knowledge to improve Quality Control and Laboratory Standard at site.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Effective communication with cross functional teams.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Attention to detail and organizational skills.
