The Junior‑to‑Mid‑Level Privacy Counsel will provide privacy expertise across APAC, support business units in managing data protection obligations, help build scalable privacy processes, and grow our legal privacy expertise in a collaborative and global environment. This role offers a clear development path toward more senior responsibilities, with the possibility of evolving into a Senior Counsel role over time (training provided).
What You’ll Do
Lead the resolution of Data Subject Rights requests including the automation process.
Provide data protection and privacy program expertise to stakeholders in the APAC region.
Draft and review Data Privacy and Data Transfer Agreements in coordination with local internal counsel.
Develop and review privacy notices and cookie notices.
Research and document complex processing operations, ensuring appropriate lawful basis of processing and data transfer documentation.
Monitor changes in APAC privacy regimes and share insights with the Privacy Team and business leaders.
Apply the principles of Privacy by Design in advising business units.
Conduct, support, and evaluate Privacy Impact Assessments (PIAs).
Support the efficient operation and continuous improvement of corporate privacy processes, including breach reporting, data retention, data subject rights reporting, records of processing, and PIAs.
Assist in the communication of the corporate privacy program, demonstrating clear presentation and influencing skills.
Manage a diverse workload across multiple projects and regulatory frameworks.

Qualified lawyer in Malaysia (mandatory).
Minimum 2–3 years’ practical experience in data protection/privacy.

Be a subject matter on emerging AI regulations or guidance in the Asia-Pacific region. Serve as the go-to lawyer for security and privacy incidents during Asia-Pacific working hours, exercising judgment and discretion while advising cross-functional teams on incident handling procedures and communications. Be the subject matter expert on privacy developments and data protection laws in the Asia-Pacific region impacting global technology companies. You will work collaboratively across multiple functions to advise on the impact of data protection laws or changes to such laws on Cloudflare’s business. Be a subject matter on emerging AI regulations or guidance in the Asia-Pacific region. You will work collaboratively across multiple functions to advise on the impact of AI regulations or guidance on Cloudflare’s business. Understand and advise on the requirements related to cross-border data transfers globally, with a focus on the Asia-Pacific region. Collaborate with product lawyers to implement Cloudflare’s Privacy by Design and Responsible AI policies as well as evaluating the impact of Asia-Pacific privacy and AI laws, regulatory guidance, enforcement actions, and other related guidance on product development. Support the commercial transactions legal team in negotiating data processing addendums and similar contractual language under global privacy laws. Partner with and advise Cloudflare’s Asia-Pacific public policy team on matters related to AI, data governance, data protection, and privacy. Serve as the go-to lawyer for security and privacy incidents during Asia-Pacific working hours, exercising judgment and discretion while advising cross-functional teams on incident handling procedures and communications. Duties include but will not be limited to the following: Provides legal representation to the organisation and manages the full range of legal advisory and responsibilities for RSPO’s legal entities including regulatory and statutory compliances in all relevant jurisdictions. Leads complex legal projects that span legal, business, and functional boundaries (e.g., cross geographies, subject matter areas, jurisdictions, Committees) Provides legal counsel to staff in all division on a variety of complex issues, develops and implements staff‑friendly plans, systems, and procedures. Identifies, research and analyses legal issues that affect the RSPO and its activities at the national and international levels associated with the organisation’s activities, operations, and strategic initiatives, including but not limited to, revenue diversification, and jurisdictional and programmatic expansion. Develops and provides trainings on legal issues, processes, and policies to multi‑level audiences in all divisions in the Regional Offices and Global Teams. Develops and manages the Legal and Compliance budget and manages any contracts with external counsel. Works closely with the Membership Unit to support the governance aspects of the annual General Assembly and liaise with RSPO’s legal advisor to ensure compliance with the Swiss Commercial Register. Builds and maintains relationships with and information flow to external advisors retained by the RSPO, as needed. Education Bachelor’s Degree in Law (LL.B or equivalent) from a recognised university. Strong academic background preferred. Professional Legal Qualification Admission to practice law in the relevant jurisdiction, such as: Bar admission / called to the Bar Practising Certificate or Advocate & Solicitor status Jurisdiction‑specific qualification (e.g. CLP in Malaysia, BPTC in the UK, Bar Examination in the US) Experience Minimum of 10 years’ experience including significant professional experience as in‑house legal counsel with experience: Corporate & commercial law Contract drafting and negotiation Compliance and regulatory matters Litigation management (advantageous but not always required) Intellectual property, employment law, governance, or data privacy (depending on industry) Experienced in advising senior management and Boards of international organisations. Prior success in building relationships and communicating with diverse groups of people.
