Job Description:

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Process Safety Engineer to join our Offshore Design Engineering team. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in process safety management, risk assessment, and regulatory compliance in the offshore oil and gas industry.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct process safety reviews and hazard assessments for offshore facilities, including process design, equipment selection, and operational procedures.
  • Develop and implement process safety management systems to ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations.
  • Participate in HAZOP, HAZID, and SIL studies to identify and mitigate process safety risks.
  • Review and approve process safety documentation, including P&IDs, process flow diagrams, and equipment specifications.
  • Provide technical support and guidance to project teams on process safety issues throughout the design and construction phases.
  • Collaborate with other engineering disciplines to ensure that process safety considerations are integrated into the overall design.
  • Conduct incident investigations and root cause analysis to identify opportunities for improvement in process safety performance.
  • Stay current on industry best practices and regulatory requirements related to process safety in the offshore sector.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering or related field, with a focus on process safety.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in process safety engineering, preferably in the offshore oil and gas industry.
  • Strong knowledge of process safety management systems, risk assessment methodologies, and regulatory requirements.
  • Experience with process safety software tools, such as PHA-Pro, Bowtie, or similar.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Professional certifications in process safety, such as CSP, PE, or similar, are a plus.

What role you will play in the team
  • As a Process Safety Engineer, you will be part of our exciting and rapidly expanding Kuala Lumpur Process Safety team, working with our various business lines, collaborating with our community of Process Safety discipline experts and senior technical professionals around the world to deliver engineering excellence.
  • You will provide engineering leadership in various aspects of Process Safety to our business divisions, with a mission towards providing engineering and risk management solutions for ExxonMobil’s operating facilities around the world, to ensure safe and reliable operations.
  • You will be equipped with the required skills and knowledge, and thereby also expected to be able to work across geographic boundaries, and leverage on the strength and experience of others within our organization, to ensure that we deliver maximum value to our business line partners.
  • This position is not limited to Malaysian applicants only.
What you will do
  • The position involves delivering at the highest technical quality assurance level, engineering solutions to manage our most concerning risk scenarios.
  • You are expected to utilize your competencies in explosion effects analysis and facility siting, pressure relief/disposal system adequacy, consequence analysis, dispersion modeling, fire protection, hazard identification (e.g. HAZOP or similar), risk analysis (LOPA, Event Tree Analysis, Fault Tree Analysis, Availability Target setting), as well as safety in design and management of change evaluations.
  • Collaborate and engage with risk owners within the business lines, and partner with the relevant stakeholders to arrive at effective risk management decisions regarding process safety concerns at their facilities.
  • Lead and implement ExxonMobil and industry safety in design standards and requirements in change reviews at existing production facilities and greenfield/brownfield projects, to manage process safety concerns in areas such as equipment overpressure, over-temperature scenarios, reaction hazards & defining preventive and mitigative safeguards for Major Accident scenarios.
  • Specific deliverables may also include:

• Lead Hazard and Operability (HAZOP) studies and executing other project deliverables.
• Develop and execute quantitative and qualitative risk screenings and assessments.
• Develop Consequence Modelling using PHAST and other applicable industry methods.
• Conduct Vapour Cloud Explosion Consequence and Risk analysis.
• Defining fire protection design requirements for different equipment types including Fire & Gas Mapping and reviewing new fire protection system designs.
• Provide capital project engineering support including development and deployment of Project Risk Assessment and Management Plans (RAMP) which may include completing various loss prevention and process safety deliverables throughout the project’s timeline.

  • Develop and champion team’s capability development plans and strategy, to effectively deliver on process safety and risk management business needs across multiple business lines.
  • This role would require that you be able to work during non-standard office work hours, collaborating with multiple stakeholders across different time zones, to deliver on the above range of activities.
  • You are expected to be reasonably mobile in this job role and be available to travel to other ExxonMobil/third-party owned facilities around the world as needed to facilitate and complete the necessary tasks and reviews.
About you

Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering or related Petroleum Engineering field.
  • Minimum of total 8 years relevant working experience in petrochemical, oil and gas industry in Technical, Operations, Process Design, or Engineering functions.
  • At least 3 years of work experience in specific Process Safety Engineering job roles.
  • Demonstrated competency and experience in the following areas:

• Hazard identification, risk analyses and assessment methodologies (e.g. Hazard Identification (HAZID), Inherent SHE Review, PHAs)
• Knowledgeable in industry codes, standards and practices relevant to process design and safety (e.g. ASME, API, NFPA, ANSI, IEC etc.) and Recognized and Generally Accepted Good Engineering Practices (RAGAGEP)
• Risk scenario development techniques, including various methods of risk analysis.
• Good working knowledge of engineering software tools such as PHAST, PHA-Pro, Hysys, Flarenet, FlareSim, Pipenet/AFT is an advantage.

  • Prior experience of working within a manufacturing/production facility is preferred.

The position involves delivering at the highest technical quality assurance level, engineering solutions to manage our most concerning risk scenarios. You are expected to utilize your competencies in explosion effects analysis and facility siting, pressure relief/disposal system adequacy, consequence analysis, dispersion modeling, fire protection, hazard identification (e.g. HAZOP or similar), risk analysis (LOPA, Event Tree Analysis, Fault Tree Analysis, Availability Target setting), as well as safety in design and management of change evaluations. Collaborate and engage with risk owners within the business lines, and partner with the relevant stakeholders to arrive at effective risk management decisions regarding process safety concerns at their facilities. Lead and implement ExxonMobil and industry safety in design standards and requirements in change reviews at existing production facilities and greenfield/brownfield projects, to manage process safety concerns in areas such as equipment overpressure, over-temperature scenarios, reaction hazards & defining preventive and mitigative safeguards for Major Accident scenarios. Specific deliverables may also include: • Lead Hazard and Operability (HAZOP) studies and executing other project deliverables. • Develop and execute quantitative and qualitative risk screenings and assessments. • Develop Consequence Modelling using PHAST and other applicable industry methods. • Conduct Vapour Cloud Explosion Consequence and Risk analysis. • Defining fire protection design requirements for different equipment types including Fire & Gas Mapping and reviewing new fire protection system designs. • Provide capital project engineering support including development and deployment of Project Risk Assessment and Management Plans (RAMP) which may include completing various loss prevention and process safety deliverables throughout the project’s timeline. Develop and champion team’s capability development plans and strategy, to effectively deliver on process safety and risk management business needs across multiple business lines. This role would require that you be able to work during non-standard office work hours, collaborating with multiple stakeholders across different time zones, to deliver on the above range of activities. You are expected to be reasonably mobile in this job role and be available to travel to other ExxonMobil/third-party owned facilities around the world as needed to facilitate and complete the necessary tasks and reviews. About you

Skills and Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering or related Petroleum Engineering field. Minimum of total 8 years relevant working experience in petrochemical, oil and gas industry in Technical, Operations, Process Design, or Engineering functions. At least 3 years of work experience in specific Process Safety Engineering job roles. Demonstrated competency and experience in the following areas: • Hazard identification, risk analyses and assessment methodologies (e.g. Hazard Identification (HAZID), Inherent SHE Review, PHAs) • Knowledgeable in industry codes, standards and practices relevant to process design and safety (e.g. ASME, API, NFPA, ANSI, IEC etc.) and Recognized and Generally Accepted Good Engineering Practices (RAGAGEP) • Risk scenario development techniques, including various methods of risk analysis. • Good working knowledge of engineering software tools such as PHAST, PHA-Pro, Hysys, Flarenet, FlareSim, Pipenet/AFT is an advantage. Safety Critical Elements (SCE) Management:
Organize / Lead Bow-Ties workshops, define SCEs, communicate performance standards requirements, review SCE design, manage tracking and review of EPCI assurance tasks to ensure that safety critical elements are designed, procured, constructed, commissioned, and installed in accordance with performance standards for the prevention and mitigation of MAEs.

Risk Consultant/Subcontractor Management:
Coordinate and manage risk consultant/subcontractor to ensure the risk of the facility is properly assessed in accordance with the scope of work and methodology, in a timely manner and on budget.

Process Safety Team Guidance:
Instruct and guide process safety engineers to collect risk assessment input data, review risk assessments, prepare deliverables, review other discipline deliverables, and collaborate with other disciplines and departments. Issue accurate deliverables, minimizing mistakes and maximizing efficiency. Minimize / manage deviations from company standards, client and regulatory requirements of safety-related systems.

Performance Goals:
Set and contribute to the achievement of Project / Engineering Performance Goals defined for the year / project.

Regulatory Compliance:
Collaborate with the proposal / project team, consistently check deliverables for compliance, attend audits and resolve non-conformities to deliver a regulatory compliant installation. Minimize non-conformities and delays to first oil.

Client Management:
Communicate professionally with the client, provide responses to client comments such that the client is satisfied that hazards are managed appropriately.

Problem Solving:
Anticipate potential problems, take preventative action and develop solutions for technical problems that arise. Problems are adequately addressed from a risk perspective, balancing client’s long-term benefit, current needs and limitations, lifecycle value, and client’s goals.

Change Management:
Collaborate with the project team to ensure that changes are managed in accordance with the Management of Change Procedure and their impact on risk are properly evaluated.

Lessons Learnt:
Formulate solutions to lessons learnt and ensure relevant lessons learnt are communicated to process safety engineers and other disciplines, including other business units for improved management of MAHs and project execution.


Process Safety Competencies:
Ensure technical competencies are met and guide the development of process safety engineers to improve technical competency and soft skills.

Qualifications
