Hardware Design Engineer

Location: Penang, 07, MY

The Senior Lead Engineer, Electrical Design develops new electrical systems/circuits for various applications. Research system ideas and draw up plans for these systems, and capture them in schematics and system specifications. Test, simulate, validate and qualify their systems and make adjustments as needed. Provide support throughout the manufacturing of the electrical systems they have designed.
The Senior Lead Engineer, Electrical Design works in cross functional teams with other designers, customers, manufacturing engineering and project leadership to ensure robust and high quality product development. Enhance designs with feedback from reviews in areas such as manufacturing, test, supply chain, reliability, industrial design and simulations.

Duties

Identify technical issues, troubleshoot and resolve them by coordinating with R&D, Manufacturing and Field teams

Participate in customer technical meetings and prepare training programs for internal subordinates.

Hardware validation of Networking, Storage, Server products against customer’s infield issues, requirements and Mfg. issues during NPI or RMA

System validation including DVT (Design Validation Trial), SPIT (Signal, Power, Integrity & Timing) environmental & regulatory approval.

Qualify alternative components for compatibility, cost effectiveness and benchmarking

Support Manufacturing Engineering and Test Engineers on trouble shooting and resolving technical issues and root cause analysis

Work with software teams to identify root cause of system failure

Ability to install software such as Linux based Operating Systems, ONIE, BIOS, BMC, SES

Proficient in using various test and measurement equipment including but not limited to Oscilloscope, Impedance analyzer, Power meter, Signal analyzer, Spectrum

Candidates should have 8+ years' experience in either Network, Storage or Server products.

Strong electrical design and debug skills required

Familiar with PCIe, NVMe, SAS, SATA, I2C, SPI, DDR buses

SDRAM timing and integrity analysis for clocks, strobes, S&H, Power bounce, temp stability

Hands-on design knowledge of latest peripheral chipsets for Gigabit Ethernet, SCSI, SATA, SAS, USB, Ethernet, & PCI cards etc.

High performance RISC / X86 CPUs and architecture including Intel, AMD, MRVL

Proficient in using various test and measurement equipment including but not limited to Oscilloscope, Impedance analyzer, Power meter, Signal analyzer, Spectrum analyzer

Qualify alternative components for compatibility, cost effectiveness and benchmarking

System validation including DVT (Design Validation Trial), SPIT (Signal, Power, Integrity & Timing) environmental & regulatory approval.

Work with software teams to identify root cause of system failure

Working knowledge of windows & Linux configuration, installation procedure, network configuration, driver configuration etc.

Working knowledge of Diag, ONIE, BIOS, BMC, Linux and Windows operating systems

Knowledge of the following would be desirable:

Experience of working in medium sized multidisciplinary development teams

Ethernet Switches, Server, Storage products

Orcad Schematics & Allegro PCB layout tools

  • Duties of this position are performed in a normal office environment.
  • Duties may require extended periods of sitting and sustained visual concentration on a computer monitor or on numbers and other detailed data.
  • Repetitive manual movements (e.g., data entry, using a computer mouse, using a calculator, etc.) are frequently required.

We are looking for a Hardware Design Engineer to support our client services, including but not limited to BOM, schematic, and layout of platforms for the next generation of CPU/GPU/PCH. These platforms will be used by the validation team to validate CPUs, PCHs, and GPUs across different segments such as Server, Client, Graphics, and Device divisions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with multiple teams including layout, materials, power delivery, signal integrity, package design, board validation, software coding, and other board design teams to deliver high-quality board designs that meet platform and system-level electrical requirements, high-speed digital signal requirements, DFT, and DFM standards.
  • Utilize Allegro Design Entry HDL (ConceptHDL) and Allegro PCB Designer for schematic editing and PCB layout review. Manage BOMs using Speed and troubleshoot hardware issues in the lab using equipment like oscilloscopes and logic analyzers.
  • Have a solid understanding of PCB routing topology, design guidelines, layout placement strategies, PCB stack-up technology, and interfaces such as DDR, PCIe, USB, etc. Develop technical knowledge in architecture, memory types, power delivery, power management, and high-speed IO buses.
  • Proficiency in hardware description languages such as Verilog, VHDL, or SystemVerilog.
  • Experience with test automation scripting and programming languages.
  • Familiarity with FPGA and ASIC design flows.
  • Experience in logic design for high-speed interfaces, memory controllers, or DSP is advantageous.
  • Development experience with FPGA and CPLD.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics, or related hardware fields.
  • Good knowledge of PC architecture, electronic components, basic circuit design, etc.
  • Strong analytical and debugging skills with problem-solving capabilities.
  • Effective communication, documentation, and teamwork skills.
  • Additional knowledge of schematic capture, simulation, and software programming is preferred.

  • To maintain engineering databases and design / process documentations
  • Able to design, develop, and test electronic circuits, PCB layouts and embedded systems.
  • Ensure that hardware designs are optimized for performance, reliability, and cost-effectiveness.
  • Build and test hardware prototypes to verify designs and functionality.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve hardware issues, including signal integrity, power distribution, and component failure.
  • Conduct rigorous testing for environmental, thermal, and performance factors.
  • Ensure hardware designs meet quality standards and regulatory requirements (e.g., CE, UL, RoHS).
  • Analyze failure reports and work on continuous improvements for reliability and performance.
  • Assist in the transfer of designs to manufacturing, ensuring efficient production processes.
  • Support in component selection, procurement, and assembly.
  • Additional duties to drive hardware topics include:
  • To provide technical support for Gutor design boards for internal or external.
  • To lead and maintain the implementation of new design
  • To define and drive testing procedures and templates required for part qualification of new part introduction together with testbay and quality team
  • To implement clear design rules on how to integrate new released in a full customer solution.
  • To work closely with the purchasing department on supporting technical queries for implementation and qualification of new vendors.
  • Support RCA when there is a customer complaint.
  • Support test bay for troubleshooting.

Knowledge And Skills – Required

  • Degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering or equivalent
  • Electrical design engineering or equivalent experience (minimum 2 years)
  • Proven experience in hardware design, development, and testing.
  • Understanding circuit design and analysis (analog and digital).
  • Knowledge of industry standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Capable to self-organize and drive multiple work priorities in parallel effectively
  • Decision-making, able to take decisive actions based on technical and procedural facts and experience
  • Capable to follow and practice international standard process flows and safety regulations tailored to Gutor requirements
  • Proficient in written and spoken English language

Job Description

As a Hardware Test Engineer, you will design and develop test processes for computer hardware and related equipment. Your role includes creating test plans and equipment, implementing and monitoring test procedures, and conducting hardware product validations to ensure performance and reliability.

Key responsibilities:
  • Execute Radio Frequency Performance Test Cases defined in 3GPP.
  • Execute power consumption, audio, EMC, signal integrity test cases.
  • Execute the use case testing for the producible categories of 2G/3G/4G/5G/BT/WIFI product.
  • Execute the verification of the version, golden board, production testing tools, and fixtures.
  • Document detail test reports of product, create concise summary of the test findings for customer reference.
  • Design a simple project testing strategy.
  • Support FAE/sales/certification teams in resolving test issues.
  • Submit test bugs and track the closed loop.
Qualifications required:
  • Bachelor's degree in electronic, information, or wireless communication engineering.
  • Basic knowledge of electronic, telecommunications, computer science.
  • Proficiency in using spectrum analyzers, oscilloscopes, power supplies, network analyzers, and integrated meters.
  • Fresh graduates are encouraged to apply.
Preferred skills and experience:
  • Preference for candidates with testing experience in RF, EMC, Reliability, and Signal Integrity.
  • Familiarity with wireless communication protocols is desirable.
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills.

The Senior Lead Engineer, Electrical Design develops new electrical systems/circuits for various applications. Research system ideas and draw up plans for these systems, and capture them in schematics and system specifications. Test, simulate, validate and qualify their systems and make adjustments as needed. Provide support throughout the manufacturing of the electrical systems they have designed.
The Senior Lead Engineer, Electrical Design works in cross functional teams with other designers, customers, manufacturing engineering and project leadership to ensure robust and high quality product development. Enhance designs with feedback from reviews in areas such as manufacturing, test, supply chain, reliability, industrial design and simulations.

**Duties**
+ **Identify technical issues, troubleshoot and resolve them by coordinating with R&D, Manufacturing and Field teams**
+ **Participate in customer technical meetings and prepare training programs for internal subordinates.**
+ **Hardware validation of Networking, Storage, Server products against customer's infield issues, requirements and Mfg. issues during NPI or RMA**
+ **System validation including DVT (Design Validation Trial), SPIT (Signal, Power, Integrity & Timing) environmental & regulatory approval.**
+ **Qualify alternative components for compatibility, cost effectiveness and benchmarking**
+ **Support Manufacturing Engineering and Test Engineers on trouble shooting and resolving technical issues and root cause analysis**

+ **SDRAM timing and integrity analysis for clocks, strobes, S&H, Power bounce, temp stability**
+ **Hands-on design knowledge of latest peripheral chipsets for Gigabit Ethernet, SCSI, SATA, SAS, USB, Ethernet, & PCI cards etc.**
+ **High performance RISC / X86 CPUs and architecture including Intel, AMD, MRVL**
+ **Proficient in using various test and measurement equipment including but not limited to Oscilloscope, Impedance analyzer, Power meter, Signal analyzer, Spectrum analyzer**
