Canonical is a leading provider of open-source software and operating systems to the global enterprise and technology markets. Our platform, Ubuntu, is very widely used in breakthrough enterprise initiatives such as public cloud, data science, AI, engineering innovation and IoT. Our customers include the world's leading public cloud and silicon providers, and industry leaders in many sectors. The company is a pioneer of globally distributed collaboration, with 1100+ colleagues in 75+ countries and very few office-based roles. Teams meet two to four times yearly in person, in interesting locations around the world, to align on strategy and execution.
The company is founder-led, profitable and growing.
We are hiring a Web/UI Engineer to develop a data-rich and reliable user experience. These frontends are constructed using JS, CSS, React, and Flutter, and serve as Canonical's enterprise products that act as the company's face to our users.
In order to create consistency across our products and sites, we have a central team that builds an open-source React toolkit and presentation layer, the Vanilla Framework. We are excited to develop this further and see if we can help more open-source projects build performant and accessible interfaces that respond well to diverse layouts. We use REST APIs for communication, and we consider API design an important part of the process.
Flutter is a new front-end technology that has the potential to unify our desktop and web development. We are growing the team's exposure to Flutter and have roles on both web and Ubuntu engineering for this specialism.
We hire developers with outstanding academic results and a passion for open-source software, innovation, and cutting-edge web technologies. In these roles, you will have the opportunity to make significant contributions through high-quality, front-end and back-end code while exhibiting technical leadership, exceptional design, and intuitive user experience.
Additionally, we encourage colleagues to engage with the broader open-source community. We're looking for individuals who can help build a thriving community, contribute to a broad range of technologies, and ensure seamless software operations at scale.

Canonical Get AI-powered advice on this job and more exclusive features.

Join to apply for the Senior Front-End Engineer (Ember.js) role at Codelitt
At Codelitt, we are more than just a product-development company - we are creators, innovators, and problem solvers. Our mission is to help companies unlock their potential by building exceptional digital experiences. We partner with businesses to bring their most ambitious ideas to life, from concept to launch and beyond. Our team thrives on challenges, pushing the boundaries of technology to craft solutions that make a real impact. If you're passionate about innovation and love tackling meaningful problems, you’ll find your home at Codelitt.
About the Role!
We’re teaming up with a global fintech leader to build a guided, data-seeded demo experience that lets prospective clients explore the core platform before they buy. You’ll be the senior front-end engineer on a small, cross-functional squad charged with shipping the MVP. The codebase is a modern Ember.js app connected to a large Java REST back end. You’ll own rich UI flows, inject realistic demo data, and ensure the experience mirrors production quality.
Who You Are:
- Ember-fluent. You have deep experience with Ember.js (or can ramp up fast) and know its conventions inside out. No back-end development required—your focus is 100% front end.
- Design-system champion. You’re comfortable building and extending component libraries, token-based theming, and responsive layouts.
- UX-centric. You think in flows and micro-interactions—accessibility and performance are always top of mind.
- Ownership-oriented. You unblock yourself, keep scope laser-focused, and communicate progress proactively across time zones (US & LATAM).
- Collaborative communicator. You enjoy partnering with designers and PMs, giving/receiving feedback, and demoing work early and often.
- Audit the existing Ember codebase, identify modernization opportunities, and break work into incremental PRs.
- Seed the environment with internally consistent fake data for realistic demos.
Implement the Design System
- Build reusable, documented components (with Storybook or similar) that adhere to brand guidelines and WCAG accessibility standards.
- Collaborate with designers to evolve tokens, variants, and interaction patterns as real-world needs emerge.
Ensure Quality & Maintainability
- Write robust unit, integration, and visual regression tests.
- Champion best practices in code reviews, linting, performance profiling, and CI/CD.
Collaborate & Deliver
- Pair with client engineers, designers, and PMs to refine scope.
- Demo progress weekly, iterate on feedback, and hit the January launch window.
- 5+ years professional front-end experience with SPAs; 2+ years working extensively in Ember.js (or demonstrably fast ramp-up)
- Hands-on experience rolling out or evolving a design system (tokens, theming, documentation).
- Strong grasp of state management, component architecture, and automated testing.
- Familiarity with accessibility standards (WCAG 2.1+), performance budgeting, and CI/CD pipelines.
- Bonus: experience migrating legacy Ember apps to Octane/Glimmer components or TypeScript.
Soft Skills:
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail
- Strong communication skills and a collaborative mindset
- Ability to work effectively in a remote, cross-functional team
- Proactive and adaptable to a fast-paced development environment - especially vital on a six-month runway
If this sounds like what you are looking for, we can't wait to hear from you!
We will be in touch as soon as possible if there's a good fit. Thanks for your interest in Codelitt!
Note: We are not interested in working with recruiters or any agencies at this time.
