Job Description
We’re always trying to expand our horizons beyond New York and explore skating scenes in other parts of the world. While the level of skating in emerging scenes may vary, their spots and styles are always fresh, and we enjoy witnessing raw talent grow. That’s why when we saw Kenny Kamil’s new part, " Eirie ," from Singapore, we wanted to share it, even if many might not know where Singapore is. Researching Singapore, we found that the city is famously clean, with strict fines for littering and jaywalking—though the idea of an alleyway Trident bust made us laugh. Despite the fines, Singapore offers many untapped spots and an eager skate scene. Does Kenny Kamil have a sponsorship from a barbershop? Do they give free haircuts? Yes, it’s a new trend in Singapore. His barbershop sponsors him with free haircuts, and he just puts their sticker on his board. Is he always looking fresh in his clips? (Laughs) Yes, he gets a haircut before every event. Do people surf or have beach days in Singapore? No, the waters around Singapore are flat and filled with offshore ships and oil, so surfing isn’t really an option. What was your impression of LA when you visited? It was amazing to meet pro skaters like Stevie Williams and others. I also skated Phoenix AM and saw interesting things like a three-wheeled car. I enjoyed In-N-Out and found it worth the hype, especially since halal options are limited for me. Have you seen American pros in Singapore? Yes, the New Balance team, including Jack Curtin, has visited. Nyjah and Wes Kramer have also been here. What’s unique about skating in Singapore? There are many spots, especially marble ledges, all over the city. The good ground allows for cruising almost anywhere. Is the no chewing gum law true, and is Singapore really that clean? Yes, chewing gum was banned, though some smuggle it in from Malaysia. The city is very clean, much more than I expected. Any stories about Singapore cops? I was fined about $300 once, but that’s rare. Historically, police have chased skateboarders and seen them as criminals, but after the Olympics, enforcement has eased. Are you planning to represent Singapore in the next Olympics? I’m not into contests, and Singapore has limited skate facilities—only two parks for now, with a new one being built. Which country has the best skate spots in Asia? For me, Thailand, especially Bangkok, has the most spots and a fun skate scene, though the food there is hard to find. Do you thrift in Singapore? Thrift shops are expensive here, around $0. I usually go to Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia for cheaper finds, especially vintage tees. Do you have a job besides skating? Yes, I’m serving my national service in Singapore as a firefighter but working in admin. I have about five months left of my two-year service. Did you do military training? No, I didn’t. I prefer not to risk my life that way. How much do you earn per year? As an admin, I make about $630 USD per month. Would you like to visit America again to skate and chew gum freely? Absolutely, I’d be hyped to go back and enjoy gum without restrictions. Have you considered smuggling American gum into Singapore? I’m a bit scared to answer that. Singapore is very strict. Shoutout to Singapore! Hawker centre gang! It’s impressive how skaters manage in the heat and humidity, jeans and all.
