Job Description
Note: The following is an opportunity for flexible, part-time, volunteer work. Please do not apply if you are only looking for paid employment. All positions are remote/work-from-home.
Are you an experienced project manager who is passionate about making a difference? Are you excited about the opportunity to work with smart and talented individuals committed to producing great content in the public interest? Can you commit a minimum of 10 hours a week, working remotely on your own schedule with our diverse team?
Check out WhoWhatWhy.org. You’ll see that we’re a credible solution to the debate over whether the news is “fake” or not, with agenda-free research and publishing that provides fresh analysis. We’re not left-wing, not right-wing, and not consensus-seeking. We just want the truth — whatever it is.
We have thought long and hard about what limits journalism’s ability to effect positive change in the public interest, and we see two dominant factors in the landscape: (1) Commercial entities focused on financial goals and eyeballs, which leads to sameness and superficiality in coverage, and (2) Ideologically driven outfits catering to a specific mindset and not challenging readers to rethink values.
At WhoWhatWhy, we approach each story with an open mind, curiosity, and a willingness to dig deep and ask hard questions — even when told not to. We’re committed to discovering what is going on beneath the surface and why.
As a nonprofit that isn’t funded by a zillionaire, we don’t accept corporate ads and have a limited budget, so the role is volunteer and not widely paid. We do have big ambitions, which is why we’re seeking an experienced project manager to work closely with our leadership team to manage projects from conception to completion.
Responsibilities- Manage small to medium-scale projects from conception to completion
- Analyze all aspects of projects, identify stakeholders, and delegate tasks to team members
- Actively track and report on the status of all projects
- Facilitate or lead project meetings as needed and drive toward continual progress
- Ensure all documentation of project processes is prepared and filed by the project team
- Assist in the recruitment and selection of prospective team members
- Seek out opportunities for continuous process improvement across WhoWhatWhy
- 2+ years of experience in tracking and managing multiple projects
- Committed to stay for a minimum of 1 year
- MBA or related advanced degree (preferred)
- PMP or project management certification (preferred)
- Highly organized, motivated, and able to juggle and prioritize multiple projects
- Solid grasp of and commitment to our mission
- Demonstrate a collaborative spirit and ability to thrive in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment
- Channel your passion in a stimulating environment
- Learn the nuts and bolts of nonprofit operations in an up-and-coming organization
- Develop new skills and gain valuable experience to enhance your professional trajectory
- Do amazing work on a flexible, part-time basis
- Have fun while you make a difference
You will work remotely on your own schedule, with a minimum commitment of 5-7 hours a week (more is welcome). Our team is spread worldwide, so we primarily use Slack and email. Team members are expected to be highly responsive in a timely manner.
If you are self-motivated, work well independently, enjoy collaborating with other leaders, and can commit quality time per week to help achieve team goals, we’d like to hear from you.
To ApplyWe will not review applications that appear to be mass submissions. To apply, send your resume and a customized cover letter explaining why you’re a good fit. If there is no option to attach a cover letter, please email a cover letter to Confirm that this is initially a volunteer position. Thank you!
Please note that response emails sometimes end up in spam folders; please check yours. Thank you!
