Reef Check Malaysia is seeking an Assistant Programme Manager based in Semporna. The work will be mainly centred in the office in Semporna Town but regular travel to other parts of Sabah is required. Motivated individual with great passion for environmental conservation and community development are encouraged to apply.
Job purposeAs an Assistant Programme Manager, you will assist the implementation of our long-term marine conservation programme plan according to established Reef Check Malaysia practices and procedures, with the goal of establishing co-management to sustainably manage Semporna’s marine ecosystems and promoting sustainable waste management. The Assistant Programme Manager will also be expected to assist with the implementation of Reef Check Malaysia’s EcoAction, Science, Advocacy, and Management programmes in Malaysia.
Key responsibilities- Lead the implementation of pilot waste management programme in Semporna town, which involves regular stakeholder consultations, including government officials and villagers.
- Coordinate community surveys and manage village engagement team, including contributing to data analysis and reporting.
- Engage and consult with coastal communities to foster community involvement in Reef Check Malaysia’s project.
- Contribute to the development of communication materials and implement awareness programs on marine conservation, targeting schools and local communities.
- Assist in managing budget and financial accounts for Semporna programmes.
- Participate in relevant field activities under Reef Check Malaysia, as required by the Programme Manager.

- Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in a related discipline
- Excellent written and verbal communication in Bahasa Malaysia and English

Job Scope and Key Responsibilities:
- Managing raw seaweed procurement in Semporna (including farmers onboarding, price negotiations, and seaweed quality checks).
- Arranging the transportation of purchased seaweed from the ocean to the Semporna warehouse and ensuring smooth land transportation to customers.
- Overseeing the drying and packing of seaweed, including sun drying processes, to maintain quality and efficiency.
- Managing labourers for seaweed drying, packing, and warehouse operations.
- Loading shipping containers and coordinating with shipping companies to ensure timely and efficient deliveries.
- Maintaining the cleanliness and safety of the Semporna warehouse, ensuring proper storage of seaweed and other goods while upholding HACCP standards.
- Managing and ensuring compliance with local licenses, permits, and certifications required for shipments, facilities, and business operations.
- Overseeing the safety and maintenance of company assets (boat & car).
- Team Leadership and Supervision - Effectively oversee and guide a team, including boatmen and helpers, to ensure clarity and alignment with their respective roles and responsibilities.
- Overseeing daily operations for efficiency, continuously assessing processes for improvement, and establishing SOPs for streamlined execution.
