A very special vacancy is available to join the Animal Keeping team at Longleat, where we are looking for someone to join the Safari Park as a Lead Keeper. Primarily based within the hoof stock section the successful candidate will also support all areas of the park. If you can motivate and lead a dedicated team, whilst bringing in a depth of knowledge gained through multiple years' experience working with large exotic animals, we would love to hear from you.
This role requires multiple years' experience working with large exotic animals, ideally with a focus on hoof stock.
What will this role entail?
Reporting directly to the Manager for Safari you will lead the hoof stock keeping team, not only supervising the daily care of the animals and promoting excellent levels of guest experience but guiding and supporting all the keepers within the team in terms of their day to day work and development.
Key duties will include:
- Leading on all aspects of daily husbandry, management of resources, as well as enclosure maintenance and improvement.
- Providing support to ensure high levels of proficiency throughout the team.
- Monitoring and observing the health and security of animals, including behaviour patterns and reporting any problems to the Team Manager.
- Actively interacting with guests, providing assistance and responding to escalated enquires and complaints.
- Ensuring that section policies and procedures and standard operating procedures are adhered to at all times and assist the Team Manager in policy development.
- Assist Team Managers in maintaining databases for ex situ populations (EEP/ESB) as well as using ZIMS, and of working on in situ and ex-situ conservation projects.
- Assisting with the preparation of approved diets and carrying out the correct feeding procedures.
- Ensuring that all animal areas are clean and fit for purpose. Including log and reporting any maintenance issues to Team Manager.
What will I need to be considered for this vacancy?
- It is essential you have experience in an animal collection, with specific vocational and technical skills pertaining to the husbandry and management of the managed species.
- DMZAA qualification or suitable recognized experience equivalent.
- Proven history in a supervisory role essential
- Experience of visitor interactions within an animal organization and driven by the buzz of working in a busy environment
- Flexibility with working hours to meet company requirements
- Have an ability to work under pressure
- Excellent observational skills and the ability to identify animal health problems quickly.
- Ability to carry out agreed veterinary treatments accurately as determined by vet team/team leader/curator.
- Good record keeping and follow up observations on treatments and conditions.
- A Full UK Clean Driving Licence.
- Excellent interpersonal skills
You’ll be employed on a permanent 40 hour contract with working hours to vary over a 7 day rota basis, including weekends, evening and bank holidays as required.

Responsibilities:
- Assist the veterinarians in day-to-day tasks.
- Handle and restrain patients during procedures.
- Process samples for laboratory testing and operate blood machines.
- Assist with x-ray and/or surgery preparations, setting up the operating theatre, assist veterinarians during surgery, and clean and sterilize surgical instruments and the operating theatre post-surgery.
- Provide animal nursing and maintain general welfare for hospitalized patients and boarders, including vitals monitoring, wound management, bandaging support, preparing food, medicating, feeding, and exercising.
- Coordinate medical centre's waste and sharp disposal, ensuring compliance with waste disposal regulations.
- Maintain hygiene standards in the medical centre, clean and disinfect cages, kennels, and common areas; maintain feeding utensils.
- Maintain a high standard of patient care, build good relationships with clients, and provide excellent customer service to encourage repeat business.
- Perform reception duties, including answering the telephone, making appointments, preparing accounts, accepting payments, and writing receipts.
- Arrange the schedule of appointments (outpatient, inpatient, surgical, pet transportation) for each day and manage clients' ward visits.
- Manage and prepare quotations, invoices, update the cash register, and prepare important assignments for the next day.
- Dispense medications and provide clear and accurate dosing instructions to clients on medicines prescribed by veterinarians.
- Maintain stock control, coordinate orders for medicines, consumables, and domestic items, keep records, and follow up on pending items.
- Record and maintain clinical and office records, filing, and knowledge of the computer system.
- Perform ad-hoc/other duties assigned by management from time to time.
- At least a Higher Secondary / STPM / A Level / Pre-U, Diploma, Advanced / Higher / Graduate Diploma.
- Diploma / Certificate in Veterinary Nursing / Animal Sciences / related courses will be an advantage.
- Preferably 1 year of clinic experience, but entry-level candidates with positive attitudes will be considered.
- Able to follow directions with and without supervision.
- Good client care and communication skills.
- Committed and passionate about animal care. Comfortable holding and restraining both dogs and cats.
- Able to work in a team and multitask.
- Must be able to work in shifts and on weekends.
